Discover Charleroi

City trip

Charleroi is the largest city in Wallonia and was once the center of Belgian industry. Unfortunately, there isn't much left of that. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of sights from the industrial era to see. And from before that. The Gothic monuments and historical buildings are mostly open to the public and are definitely worth visiting.

Industry and mosaic

For a good view of the industrial heritage of Charleroi, it is best to visit the Bois du Cazier Industrial Museum. Here you will get a comprehensive tour through time. From the coal mines to social life. Go further back in time in the Basilica of Saint Christopher, right in the center. This Byzantine basilica has a magnificent Venetian mosaic of 200 m2 with millions of pieces of colored glass.

Abbey and brewery

Just outside Charleroi, you can visit the Cistercian Abbey of Aulne. It was founded in 657, in the so-called 'Valley of Peace'. The abbey is now a ruin, and you can still feel the peaceful atmosphere in the valley. Here, you can also enjoy an authentic Belgian beer at the Val de Sambre Brewery. In addition to tours of this craft brewery, you can also buy local 'Ada beers' and other delicious regional products.
