Discover Essen
City trip
Essen is one of the larger cities in North Rhine-Westphalia and offers a unique combination of cultural attractions and industrial heritage. There is an atmosphere of progress and modernisation on all fronts. Almost no other German city has undergone such development over the centuries as Essen: from a medieval settlement to one of the world's most important centres for the coal and steel industry to a modern metropolis!
Cultural capital and Red Dot
During World War II, the historic center of Essen suffered heavily from bombings. Half of it was wiped out. Modern buildings have replaced them, resulting in a rich cultural life. It is not for nothing that Essen was named the European Capital of Culture in 2010. You can see it in the large cultural offerings of, among others, the Aalto Theater, Colosseum Theater, the Philharmonie, and the Red Dot Museum with internationally acclaimed designs.
Cultural trail at Zollverein
A nice recommendation is the Kulturpfad, in which 372 blue stones point the way to 82 highlights in architecture, sculptures, and installations. The Zollverein recalls Essen's industrial background. This former coal mine and industrial complex is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Now it is mainly a hotspot for cultural activities. In the splendid Gruga Park, you can walk through botanical gardens. Among birds and other animals, you can enjoy peace and nature.
